MARTINSBURG — Berkeley County Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Kinser announced this week that on Monday, Cody Gene Eggleton, 24, of Martinsburg, was sentenced to two and one-quarter years in jail for multiple misdemeanor offenses, followed by 24-68 years in prison for multiple felony offenses.
Upon Eggleton’s release from incarceration, he will also be subject to 50 years of supervised release and lifetime sex offender registration, Kinser said.
Eggleton was found guilty in January of this year of charges stemming from a sexual assault that occurred on or between Jan. 29 and Jan. 31, 2024, in Capital Heights.
After being indicted in May 2024 on charges of malicious assault, attempted murder, strangulation, wanton endangerment, three counts of sexual assault in the second degree, domestic assault, two counts of domestic battering, interfering with emergency communications and kidnapping, Eggleton was found guilty of the malicious assault, strangulation, domestic assault, domestic battery and interfering with emergency communications charges.
He was also found guilty of attempted second-degree murder, wanton endangerment, two counts of sexual assault in the second degree and unlawful restraint.
The case was prosecuted by Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Raymond E. Boyce, Jr. and Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Megan R. Yates in the courtroom of Judge Debra. M.H. McLaughlin. Kinser expressed appreciation to Deputy Weidman, of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department, for her investigation into the case.
